Elizabeth Larkam, renowned author, teacher and trainer will be teaching The Mindful Body’s “Master Series” from May 15-July 26th. (*Note – there will be no class on Memorial Day, May 29th). . 

She brings her Internationally acclaimed intensive study of “Fascia in Motion” to The Mindful Body, which will be her theme for these 12 classes. Students are not required to take all classes, but are encouraged to take as many as they can, as themes and understanding will build from week to week.

This Master Class series is included in all memberships and will be priced as regular yoga classes. Please see rates for single classes, memberships, and class cards online here.

Week 1 : May 15 and 17
Exploring the Myofascial Slings
The neuromyofascial system is your body-wide organ of communication. View video of human living fascia in motion. Learn about the structure and functions of fascia. View slides of dissections to understand the relationship of fascia and muscle. Experience the myofascial slings in movement on the mat.

Week 2 : May 22 and 24
Elastic Recoil : Put a Spring In Your Step
Integrating the myofascial slings in walking. Learn about the fascia property of elastic recoil. Practice movement sequences designed to develop elastic recoil.
Week 3 : May 31 (no class Memorial Monday)
Eye Gaze and Stability
Learn how the eyes, tongue, hands and feet guide your movement.
Embryological development of the neuromyofascial system lays the foundation that connects movements of the eyes, tongue and hands and feet with the fascial slings. Learn to direct your gaze, position your tongue and organize your hands and use your feet in order to improve your trunk control.
Week 4 : June 5 and 7
Improving Standing Balance
Standing Balance (right-side up and up-side down), a fascia-focused movement perspective. Learn how vision, proprioception and vestibular function are integrated to keep us in balance. Practice movement sequences that improve standing balance
Week 5 : June 12 and 14
“Tech Neck” and Posture 
Learn how computer screens influence your entire physical organization. Practice fascia-focused movements that support comfortable, sustainable use of smart phones, tablets, lap tops and desk top computers.
Week 6 : June 19 and 21
Developing a Home Practice 
Review of all class material to date with an emphasis on answering your questions and preparing to develop a sustainable independent home practice.
Last Class : June 26
Review and Subtle Practices 
Refine your practice of fascia-focused movement sequences on the mat. Learn sequences and gather resources for your independent home practice.

MASTER WORKSHOPS WITH ELIZABETH LARKAM

Elizabeth is Internationally renowned as a teacher of teachers, and works with chronic and acutely injured clients.

This is an in-depth study of fascia. In this workshop, you will learn how Fascia-focused movement tunes your fascial system, which exciting and emerging research shows, is the whole-body organ of communication.

You will walk away from this workshop having learned :

  • What fascia is, where it is and what it does
  • The architecture and properties of your neuromyofascial system
  • How fascia-focused movement improves proprioception, the awareness of where you are in space. Proprioception is necessary for balance, coordination, mobility and strength.
  • How fascia-focused movement is integral to Variable-Intensity Interval Training (VIIT), the newest, safest way to achieve exercise benefit in less time
  • A fascia-focused movement perspective on aging well. Fascia changes with age. Practices through the decades that enhance the function of your neuromyofascial system.

In this workshop, we explore various practices you can use in your every day movement, to activate and be aware of the entire body while walking, running, biking, hiking and more!
The fascial sling system will be studied in depth, and you will learn how to activate them for your every day movements.
You will learn to :  
  • Hike with efficiency and walk around the City with ease when you activate your fascial sling system
  • Understand what your fascial sling systems are, and – how they function
  • Implement highly impactful practices while you walk or hike around your favorite spaces.
  • Practice fascia-focused movement that connect your feet to your hips, core, lungs, shoulders, hands and eyes

Elizabeth Larkam is internationally recognized as an innovator of mind/body movement education and practice. She pioneered the Pilates Method Alliance® initiative Heroes in Motion® and was awarded the Medal of the Danish Society of Military Medicine in 2010 in recognition of her efforts to improve the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers.

As a Dancemedicine Pilates Specialist at Center for Sports Medicine, Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, 1985–2000, Elizabeth created Pilates protocols for orthopedic, spine, and chronic pain diagnoses. While Director of Pilates & Beyond for Western Athletic Clubs, 2000–2009, she developed the internationally acclaimed Mind & Body Center within The San Francisco Bay Club.

Elizabeth began her Pilates studies in 1985 while teaching dance at Stanford University. A Gold Certified Pilates Method Alliance® teacher, she was educated by first generation Pilates teachers. Elizabeth co-founded and co-owned Polestar Pilates Education®. When Balanced Body® Education was founded in 2004, she became a master teacher and mentor, conducting courses throughout the world. Elizabeth is a Feldenkrais® practitioner, as well as a Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® instructor.

Elizabeth authored the chapter ‘Fascia oriented Pilates training’ for the book Fascia in Sport and Movement edited by Robert Schleip (Handspring Publishing, 2015). She has worked as a Pilates Specialist with the San Francisco Ballet and Cirque de Soleil, a lecturer at the University of San Francisco in Exercise and Sports Science, a lecturer at San Francisco State University in Dance and a Fitness Editor for PilatesStyle.

Elizabeth created movement curriculum in electronic and printed form for therapeutic, dance, fitness and home markets. She developed the instructional video series that launched the Pilates Allegro® Reformer. Elizabeth’s online classes are on pilatesanytime.com and fusionpilatesedu.com. She co-teaches with Thomas W. Myers, author of Anatomy Trains®, a course that encompasses dissection and movement. In her private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area, Elizabeth uses movement to support the wellbeing of clients of all ages.
